Sidana DesignOweb Team Open Source Vs Custom Programming Posted by Rakesh Thursday, 2007-August-02 We can not neglect Open Source Packages when they are promoted well and available on the net. Clients keep coming with already installed Open Source on their server and they want to customize it.
I am not against Open Source but still feel custom programming is the best option if clients allow for it. This article gives you some ideas to clients when to choose Open Source Packages. 1. What is your budget? You do not have much budget and you want somebody can help you to install Open Source with few clicks in short time. Then your choice for open source package is good one. Most of the hosting server allows their users to install Open Source with few clicks and files are automatically transferred to a default folder and you will be provided with a link to see. On the contrary, there are less chances that you like all what has been installed, because design may not be of you taste. You need to compromise because you have no budget. Do it yourself!!!! 2. Not sure!!! But you want it Expandable and Flexible? Clients who do not know what he is expecting from Open Source, they will land up with Custom Programming after installation of Open Source. They think that it may not suit to their exact requirements Normally "Not Sure" clients start asking for Custom Programming in conjunction with Open Source, which is difficult part like adding "patches" on the software. 3. "Patches" in Open Source Packages Now client has installed Open Source but looking for more changes and flexibility. This is where Open Source Packages fail when there is expandability and flexibility. Recent example of PHPList Open Source becomes headache for my programmer when their functions in the admin area are too hard to change. Similarly OSCommerce has much issue when we go for changing some modules. 4. Look and Feel We can change look and feel of any Open Source Package, but at some extent. In the OScommerce changing Category section panel is not easy and you need to do some adjustments in your design. Similarly with other packages. 5. Which is the BEST??? I would say if client has budget and timeframe, then Custom Programming is the best options. It is easy to expandable and has flexibility to add AS MANY MODULE AS you want to add. Recent websites made by DesignOweb team using Open Source Programming are: OSCommerce http://www.thinkaudiovisual.com.au PHPList http://www.youngliberal.org Thanks for reading this blog article Rakesh K. Sidana DesignOweb Freedom with Custom Programming : Content Management System Posted by Rakesh Thursday, 2007-June-28 It is really great satisfaction while building website with custom programming for Content Management System. DesignOweb has got opportunity to work with National Organization for making Young Liberal Movement Website. When we started working on it, there was confusion about it what to use - custom programming or any other CMS packages. To be honest, whenever i download other cms package so called "open source CMS", i feel as if they have tied up my hands. Reading long documentations and list of varibles makes you feel dumb. I have seen there are lots of CMS packages claiming "user friendly" for intsallation, practically they are not. Even clients have CMS Package already download, still they come to us to work on it. I never understand if you need coder to install CMS package, then why not same coder can be used to build simple custom content manager program. It takes shorter time to build than downloaded CMS Packages with fancy graphics at the backend. Having fancy graphics at the backend of application does not make sense when only administrator has to use it. It is funny too. Custom Content Management System. helps to add, edit modules. You can change look and feel as per your requirements. I will be writing more on this topic. Keep visiting here. Posted by Rakesh Tuesday, 2007-June-26 The world wide web is heading towards making websites which can be platform independent. Making site compatible to all browsers is still pain for developers, but things are changing now. Browser companies are releasing new versions which read every website page to look same in all other browsers. Thanks to non profit organization like W3C which releases recommendations for Web Standards.
Web Standards are recommendations released by W3C organization to make WWW to be easy accessible and look the same on all platform/devices. Major changes happened when there was first release of CSS (cascading stylesheets) to replace HTML tags. The objective is to separate relavant data (content/text) from the web pages and share it on WWW. A webpage contains 2 elements - Data (text) and Design (look and feel, colors, place holders etc). The purpose is to make available data which can be accessible on any device using WWW. The use of CSS with html has a name called XHTML. All design part is done using CSS file and HTML contain Data only. Data sharing is the challenge for World Wide Web. Search Engine Technologies are refining their "robots". Robots are software which extract data from the websites. Make your website and display link on any other good website, your sites data will be captured by Search Engines. The world wide web is without any boundries, you can find a place of living by just searching in the www directory or know about anything come into your mind. W3C recommedations has listed down good practices for making web page that can run on any device and easy to search. Thanks for reading this blog. Regards, Rakesh K. Sidana DesignOweb Website Designs for Caravan Holiday Park Australia Posted by Rakesh Saturday, 2007-June-23 Australia is a country of beaches and holiday parks. There are more than 2700 holiday parks and caravan parks in Australia. Most of caravan parks are affiliated to either Top Tourist Parks or Big 4 Parks.
Our partner ContACT Internet Solution is maintaining websites for all parks and they have a popular website Go See Australia(http://www.goseeaustralia.com) Australia's Largest Caravanning Directory. The caravan directory site helps visitors to find tourist parks suit to your budget. Even GoSeeAustralia is providing Plan a Trip service with information on driving directions and park information with travel distances. DesignOweb helps ContACT’s clients to build unique and different website design. It is not easy task when you have to make website for same business - Holiday Parks and it should not look all same for every one. It was apprehension at first when ContACT hired us for design jobs. Now it has been more than 2 years and we are able to produce more than designs samples which have no similarity to each other site. All are made to look different. Creativity and uniqueness has made this possible. Basic specification for all caravan holiday parks remain the same, as they require space for featured packages, accommodations, online booking and contact on the design. Map for driving direction is something which occupy space on all designs, that is important for them , otherwise finding specific park is not easy to find. The only things we can not avoid to have on most of designs are color of “ocean” and “grass”. Pictures make design attractive and flash animation too. If you are planning to visit Australia, then do not forget to visit http://www.goseeaustralia.com, it can help you plan your trip to Australia. Thanks for reading this blog. Regards, Rakesh K. Sidana Website Promotion : Top Ranking Skills Posted by Rakesh Wednesday, 2007-June-06 "Can you make my website to appear at the top in the search engines?"
If you are asked this question by your clients, then read this page. It can help you. Understanding Search Engines Technologies: All popular and good search engines work on one basic formula "To provide relavant search result to users". They build their program to capture content / text of the all registered websites and rank them according to percentage of more content related to "keyword" typed in the search box. I am not counting on search website which gives you junk (result) while searching anything. Do i need any changes on the website to appear in the search engines? I reply to this question "NO"(surprised !). Your website should have relavant content / text so that search engine can store it into their database to get it listed on their page. That's it. According to Google's guideline : "Create a useful, information-rich site, and write pages that clearly and accurately describe your content." To make a point, you just need to make your website to appear as a link on a website which is already have a link in the search engine result. You must be surprised to know DesignOweb.com has never been submitted in other websites and search engines, but still it has lots of links on other pages. GUESS why! It is because of designoweb has relavant content / text in the subject called "website". Does appearing in search engine mean top ranking Taking any website to top ranking is regular check up like you have "service check up" to your car every month. You have to monitor your website regularly by visiting search engines. Do not forget your competitors are also making website to come up at top. Check their websites content and follow basic guidelines of popular search engines like Google. Google "robot" want to see relavant content and a clear hierarchy to a "keyword" which is typed in the search box. Tableless / XHTML layout are required for search engines Not necessarily. Companies claming having website made in XHTML is better than HTML to apprear in the search engines. It is not like that. If your website is made in HTML and follow web standards in the programming then you are good. Recently i came in contact with internet marketing company whoes programmer is using XHTML layout but they have used more than 50 div tags. It is useless saying that XHTML pages save html tags when you have same number of tags. Nowadays search engines technology is advanced at high level to capture ONLY text (not html/xhtml tags) and display it on the serach page. So having site in xhtml (with div tags) or html (with table tags) makes no difference for search engine robot. I have seen web pages with no meta-tags, title, or description but that had good content and still had high search engine rankings on a particular keyword search . So the content is the major factor in search engine rankings. XHTML layout helps to separate "Design" from "Data". It allows users to change design layout without changing content/data.
